I recently added a ADS-B receiver as a new feature for the site to display aircraft tracking over the Big Bend with FlightRadar24 Aircraft monitoring and tracking software. Our system provides coverage for the Big Bend region (which previously, did not have coverage over the whole region ..at least until now). This past week, I setup ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) equipment to monitor and track aircraft. The system is not Radar in the true meaning) but will most likely replace conventional radar in the near future. The area of coverage for my site is approximately 200-250 nautical miles. It receives data from the transponders on many aircraft to provide a wealth of information (read more on the technology further down) As of 2015, it was estimated that about 60% of all commercial aircraft in the US and 80% in Europe have ABD-S transponders. That number is steadily increasing as by 2020, ADS-B transponders will become mandatory for most aircraft around the world. The system can also calculate positions of non-ADS-B equipped aircraft with the help of Multilateration (MLAT), which requires that at least 4 stations are in range of the aircraft.

Our system ties in with the FlightRadar24 network and in addition to viewing aircraft over the Big Bend, I have access to their world wide coverage.
